Harvey L. Nicholson Jr., Ph.D.
I am currently an Assistant Professor of Sociology in the Department of Sociology at the University of Toronto (UofT) - St. George Campus. Before joining UofT in the fall of 2022, I was an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Florida in the Department of Sociology and Criminology & Law.
I earned my Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Central Florida (2019), M.A. in Sociology from Lehigh University, and B.A. in Sociology from West Chester University. My research examines substance use behaviors, the social determinants of health, racialization, group formation processes, and interracial relations.
I am the author and co-author of more than 25 peer-reviewed manuscripts (link to CV). My work appears in many high-quality, internationally recognized peer-reviewed journals such as Sociology of Race & Ethnicity, Drug and Alcohol Dependence, Journal of Black Studies, Sociology Compass, Journal of Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities, Race and Social Problems, and Sociological Spectrum.
Presently, I have several studies under review examining how identity exploration affects mental health and well-being among Black Americans. I am also participating in ongoing projects aiming to examine Black-Asian relations in the United States using recent national samples of Black and Asian Americans.
